06/21/13 at 12:00 AM - First Bee City USA to Host Bee City Immersion

First Bee City USA to Host Bee City Immersion:
Proliferating Bee-Friendly Communities Across the Country

Ashevillage Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable solutions in action, has partnered with the Center for Honeybee Research and the country's first Bee City USA, to bring together leaders from around the country to Asheville, NC, as they establish a national network of sister Bee Cities. The Bee City USA Immersion runs twice during 2013: June 21-30 and August 16-25.
Pollinators provide a vital ecosystem service: one in every three bites of food we eat is courtesy of insect pollination. Action is required to protect them and the environment in which they thrive to prevent our food system from collapse. Asheville is a community that has a thriving local food culture with some of the largest bee clubs and best bee schools in the nation. Home to the Center for Honeybee Research, in June of 2012 the city adopted the title of the first Bee City USA? in the country, but more importantly the responsibility that being a Bee City USA designee entails-leadership that sustain pollinators. The Bee City USA Immersion will share Asheville's wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and success with community leadership teams from other bee active cities from across the country. The goal is to explore, immerse and activate the mission and vision of the Bee City USA initiative, making the world safer for pollinators, one city at a time. Participants will come together to strategize and pioneer the first of a network of sister bee cities around the country.
The Immersion will be comprised of: strategic planning, meet-the-experts and project peer review; tours and field trips; workshops, demonstrations and knowledge sharing; and, of course, eating plenty of bee-pollinated cuisine! Following the Immersion, the teams of city representatives will return home to activate the Bee City USA initiative in their own communities. Unique in its delivery and collaborative approach, this Immersion is a one-of-a-kind experience for those who are dedicated to establishing or advancing vibrant pollinator communities.
Each Immersion will host 16 participants for an immersive experience. Participants will apply with: 1) Dedication to implement the Bee City USA initiative in their own community; 2) A team of three participating city representatives who will work together following the Immersion; 3) Ideally, one practicing beekeeper, one planning or policy-related person, and one community organizer; 4) A team of people who are 21 years, or older, and can walk around comfortably.
Participants will stay at the Ashevillage Sanctuary: Downtown's EcoSweet Retreat, a premier one-acre, eco-urban demonstration site and living-learning laboratory with a neighborhood CSA and guest house in downtown Asheville. Participants will leave buzzing with inspiration and knowledge to grow pollinator-friendly communities.
For further information on the Ashevillage Institute please visit: www.ashevillage.org.
