Queen Rearing Class

Instructor-led classes will cover Queen and Drone Biology, Basic Trait Selection, Methods of Queen Production and Equipment Needs.Afternoon breakout sessions will cover:
1. Setting up of cell starters, cell builders, finishing colonies and mating nucs in the bee yard, so please bring your veil.
2. Demonstration and practice of the Doolittle Method ? Grafting.
3. Demonstration and practice of the Cell Punch Method.
Each beekeeper will receive Dr. Larry Connors? Queen Rearing Essentials book, a grafting frame, cell bars, cell cups, grafting tool and cell punch kit. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The benefits of raising your own queens include: queens adapted to your environment, avoiding southern queens that may have mated with Africanized drones, and establishing your own nucs. Designed for the experienced beekeeper, this course will include the basics of queen rearing, the practice of grafting larvae and the Cloake board method of queen rearing which is ideal for raising a few queens. You will have the option of taking your queen cells home.

Equipment needs for courses: Bee veil, three-ring loose leaf binder, magnifying goggles are helpful, if you have them . . .
Please note: Gloves are not allowed in the apiary. All courses are held on the DelVal campus.

2013 Queen Rearing Course

The objective of this queen rearing course is to provide beekeepers with an overview of basic queen rearing techniques and hands-on experience. Lecture and demonstration will be used to give beekeepers the opportunity to see the actual steps involved in queen rearing. Each beekeeper will receive a grafting frame, cell cups, and a grafting tool. The cost for the queen rearing class is $95 per person. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
