18th Annual Auburn University Beekeeping Symposium

The 18th Annual Auburn University Beekeeping Symposium is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2013. Tentatively, the session will be conducted at the Lowder Business Building where it has been held for the past several years. The diversified program will include information updates and information for beekeepers of all experience levels. An individual series of breakout sessions will be specifically for new beekeepers. Equipment vendors from national supply companies will on site. Lunch will be provided by the Alabama Beekeepers? Association. If weather permits, an open-hive demonstration will be presented by local beekeepers. Prominent Honey Bee Scientists and Beekeeping Experts to Present Courses for Beginners and Experienced Beekeepers

The Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association (EMBA) will offer courses of instruction for beginners and experienced beekeepers on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Maritz in Fenton, Missouri. Space is limited, and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Additionally, the Second Annual St. Louis Beekeepers Mardi Gras Banquet will be held the evening before the workshop on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Maritz.
Prominent scientists Jamie Ellis, Jerry Hayes, Heather Mattila, and Juliana Rangel will be among the instructors leading the workshop. The courses will focus on beekeeping as a craft, and the biology of the honey bee as a super-organism.
The Experienced Beekeepers? course will be tailored towards intermediate and expert level beekeepers, and will place special emphasis on biology, queen rearing, swarming, and colony behavior.
The Beginners Beekeeping course is intended for persons with no prior beekeeping experience. The class will cover all aspects of basic beekeeping to prepare students to start beekeeping in 2013.
Tuition for the workshop is $75 per person before January 20, 2013. Tuition is $90 per person for those registering on or after January 20th. Registration closes February 2nd unless filled sooner. There will be a waiting list, if needed.
Lunch and refreshments are included in the cost. Registration packets include course materials, an authoritative reference book, beekeeping periodicals, and equipment catalogs.
Vendors include representatives of The Walter T. Kelley Company, Dadant & Sons, and others.
The second annual EMBA St. Louis Regional Beekeepers Mardi Gras Banquet on Friday, February 8th, features New Orleans style food and music, a cash bar, door prizes, including nucs, queens and beekeeping equipment, and a keynote speaker. Bush will share valuable techniques and stories about natural beekeeping, based on his extensive, personal experience. The Natural Beekeeping Symposium is an all-day event and will take place on February 10, 2013 from 10am to 4pm at William Penn Charter School on 3000 West School House Lane, in the EastFalls/Germantown section of Philadelphia.
Michael Bush has been keeping bees in Nebraska since the mid-1970s and is one of the leading and most visible proponents of treatment-free beekeeping. He educates beekeepers about how to keep bees without toxic chemicals, pesticides or antibiotics. The author of The Practical Beekeeper: Beekeeping Naturally, Michael is active on many beekeeping forums and provides extensive information to beekeepers on his website, www.bushfarms.com/bees.

The honey bee is one of the most fascinating and valuable resources on our planet. Have you ever thought of becoming a beekeeper? Are you curious about the plight of the honey bee in recent times? Do you wonder if there are things you can do to aid our honey bees; even if you don?t wish to keep them? If so, the St Clair Beekeepers' Association would like to invite the public to our 2013 Beginner and Public Informational Beekeeping Class to be held on Saturday, February 16, at the Madison County Farm Bureau, 900 Hillsboro Ave., Edwardsville, IL, 62025 from 8:15 am to 2:30 pm. Cost is $25/person, $35/couple. Refreshments and a light lunch (for those who pre-register by February 9th) will be available along with door prizes, a raffle for a complete hive and a nucleus colony as grand prizes, vendors, and literature and hand-outs including supplier?s catalogs. Topics to be covered include; history, preparing to keep bees, obtaining bees and equipment, swarms, stings, management, hive products, diseases and pests, and beekeeping regulations. There will be a question and answer session with a group of experienced beekeepers willing to share their knowledge and experience and act as mentors for newcomers. Beekeeping is incorporated into and regulated by the Illinois Department of Agriculture so we also invite anyone with agricultural interests to attend and learn about this important pollinator.
